North American asparagus imports high

The asparagus market is currently high as production and imports transition from Peru to Mexico. Unlike most produce markets, asparagus depends more on production than demand. “Prices are higher than a month ago,” explains Charlie Eagle, Vice President of Business Development for Southern Specialties.

No imminent threats such as weather, pest or disease are currently present to the asparagus crop; however local regional production may affect the amount of produce imported.

The majority of Southern Specialties’ production depends on two export destinations. Mexico is currently increasing asparagus acreage regularly, while fields in Peru are not being replaced causing a decrease in production. “We have received an increase in volume from Mexico, but imports from Peru remain about the same,” states Eagle.
