Return to ag production in Mucoso, Angola

What is considered to be one of the most important agricultural projects in Angola has just been launched by the Angolan Minister of Agriculture, Afonso Pedro Canga. Following restoration works costing €11 million, the aim is to ensure, as of this month, fruit and vegetable production over the initial 500 ha.

The projects also includes the construction of lodgings for the technicians, service bays, and other installations to ensure supply of drinking water. The works are carried out by Spanish company INCATEMA and also include renewing 20km of road to facilitate access for people and farm machines.

The project should initially create 80 employment opportunities on the farm, which has cold rooms on it to stock products.

Agriculture is estimated at 12.3% of Angola’s gross domestic product (GDP), i.e. slightly above the estimation of 11.9% for 2014, but far from the previous year’s figures when a 42.3% increase was recorded. Family farms, about 2.5 million households, represent 80% of basic food farming (cereals, tubers, vegetables) and the country’s largest cattle rearing workforces.
