Top fruit affected by price decreases in France

In November the decrease over one year of agricultural prices was lower (-4.5%) than in October (-5.4%). Only wine, vegetables and eggs are not affected by the price decease over one year.

The Minister of Agriculture stated in his last Agreste publication that this overall price decrease can be explained in large part due to the decline in prices for field crops, cattle and to a smaller degree, fruit.

With a particularly abundant 2014 harvest, the price of field crop produce continued to decrease in November compared to the last year, and compared to the five year average - however the decline reduces as the months progress. Wheat prices decreased by 13% whilst corn decreased by 17%.

Fruit prices also decreased, though more moderately than the previous months. The decrease concerned most of the sector, excluding kiwis and nuts. In November the prices decreased by 12% for pears and 17% for apples over a year.

The European and national apple market was not very active and sales for large export were inferior in price to previous years. Prices of Golden apples were higher than other varieties, linked to stocks from the last harvest weighing in on prices.

Vegetable prices continue to increase over the year (+3%) but less than in September (+10%) and October (+14%), punished by a mild winter that did not favour consumption of winter vegetables such as carrots, which had a price decrease over the year as well as compared to the 2009-2013 five year average. However, prices for chicory are higher for the third consecutive month than in 2013; there is an active demand for the vegetable which has reduced volume since the start of the season.
