Fruit Logisitca 2015

Holfeld Plastics shortlisted for Innovation Award

It's been a striking year for rPETeCO, the multi-application, lightweight, low carbon material with four major awards and three Highly Commended placings for Holfeld Plastics.

Now, shortlisted finalist for the Fruit Logistica Innovations Award 2015!

Holfeld uses 20% less plastic bottles to blend their rPETeCO material - only 8 out of 10 waste plastic bottles used. rPETeCO is a multi market robust tactile lightweight low carbon material using 90% recyclate each bottle weighing an average of 20gms or approx 50,000 bottles to the tonne.

rPETeCO is the next best material to compostable packaging – for growers, pack-houses, brand owners, marketing desks, distributors and retailers looking for an organic non-plastic appearance in their packaging as well as robust, lightweight, lowest carbon, available in multi colours, irresistibly tactile and using 90% recycled PET, this is the preferred option. What is more the packaging is highly versatile, multi applicational across all food & non food sectors. Holsorb in the base eliminates the need for a soak pad.

And for the organic industry rPETeCO is so important for the success of the product, for a brands identity and ethos – it has all the right features and benefits for an organic brand or for a brand owner seeking to impress their customers with strong environmental credentials.

Robert Nigh Managing Director of Fresh & Pack says, "Our customer wanted a softer more 'natural feel' for their product. They also wanted the same mechanical properties as barrier, sealability and other properties for their packing lines. Holfeld can meet a lot of these wishes with their rPETeCO product. Our customer has succeeded with this tray. It’s a new proposition in his marketplace for biological products".

Holfeld Plastics produced 43.2 tonnes of rPETeCO material over the last 12 months. If the manufacturer had used rigid PET that would have equated to 52.68 tonnes. Holfeld has therefore saved 8.78 tonnes of material in the process.

rPETeCO is made from 90% recycled plastic bottles each bottle weighing an average of 20gms or approximately 50,000 bottles to the tonne. During the last year Holfeld used 439,000 less waste plastic bottles to produce their rPETeCO trays than they would have done producing rigid PET.

rPETeCO has a specific gravity reduced from 1.33 to 1.05. The weight is up to 20% lighter than polypropylene (PP). The packaging contains up to 90% food grade post consumer recyclate acceptable in the waste stream. This has led to a 74% CO2 saving on raw materials & a 47% reduction in the carbon footprint of Holfeld’s products over the lifecycle. Tighter draught angle and therefore increased capacity of trays on the same footprint size gives better crate and shelf fill as well as improved transport logistics – more trays per pallet less trucks on the roads.

The material is the result of a 3 year research and development process supported by FP7 European project. The rPETeCO material is more temperature resistant than conventional recycled PET. The material requires less cutting force than rPET by some 20%. The material is capable of high forming definition with abilities to form ‘deep draw’ and tighter draught angle. rPETeCO demonstrates the same characteristics and material properties as virgin PET with optimal chill impact properties and top load performance. The design has been developed with challenging modern packaging systems in mind. Improved AB denest provides for optimal storage and transport. The material is highly tactile with non-plastic appearance offering shelf stand-out. The product is suitable for filming or sealing.
Barrier properties for rPETeCO are 20 times better than PP material; and for Co2 are nearly 9 times better than PP. rPETeCO is therefore significantly better than PP for modified atmosphere applications. It has considerable impact resistance to withstand modern packing lines and rigorous transport conditions.

rPETeCO adds luxury and is suitable for growers and brand owners alike looking for added value in their packaging and to enhance their environmental credentials. On shelf it offers a clear and well differentiated competitive advantage.
