Algerian potato farming sees quality and acreage increase

The potato harvest which began in December and is still going on in Ouargla, reached 360,000 quintals. This end of season production occurred on 1,200 hectares of agricultural land reserved this year for potato farming.

An increase in quality was noted, notably in Taibet (200km from Ouargla). Acreage given to such types of farming, notably irrigated with drop-by-drop and spray systems, did not exceed 150 hectares in 2007 and leapt up to 1,004 hectares during the 2013-2014 season, followed by 1,500 hectares this season. This increase is thanks to many positive factors including increased access to agricultural land, support programs concerning seeds and fertilisers and training programmes organised for farmers to learn new agricultural techniques and improve production.
