Clementine prices increasing due to shortages

After the Christmas holidays, Spanish citrus sales volumes are going up again, especially for clementines and mandarins, whose prices are increasing due to the current production shortages.

The Clemenules season, which reaches its peak between November and December, is almost complete with very unfavourable results, since early December rains affected the quality of clementines, causing spotting during storage and transport which has had an impact on prices.

With the Clemenules almost finished, there is a gap in the market right now that Morocco is taking advantage of. Spain currently has the hybrid Hernandina and Clemenvilla varieties, with the latter being the most demanded at the moment. The Clemenvilla was harvested in late December and prices currently reach approximately € 0.32 per kilo in Valencia's market.

Prices are expected to increase in the coming days as production volumes of the hybrid varieties Afourer Nadorcott reach significant levels. The low number of transactions carried out with the Nadorcott has driven its price to 0.80 Euro per kilo, while the Fortune variety stands close to 0.50 Euro per kilo.

As regards oranges, the Navelina campaign is almost coming to a close, with ridiculous prices at the moment, of between 0.9 and 0.11 Euro per kilo at origin. There are higher volumes of Salustiana available, with auction prices reaching 0.20 Euro. Meanwhile, Navel and Navelate prices range between 0.20 and 0.25 Euro per kilo. In general, orange prices are considered disastrous by the sector, in the same line as last season.
