Cuba: Camagüey's citrus harvest surpassed six thousand tons

The citrus companies in the Valley of Cubitas, located in the northern part of the province of Camagüey, harvested 6,338 tons last year, mostly of grapefruit and orange for export as fresh fruit or juice concentrates.

Leidy Conde Figueredo, deputy director of the agricultural company in the area, said the results had exceeded records of other stages in the combined citrus sales of Ceballos, Ciego de Ávila.

The productions are mainly sold in Cuba's tourist poles and to the European market, where it is used to enhance the flavour of other citrus products supplied from other countries.

The specialist said that, in 2014, they had continued to rehabilitate and replace the plantations with many years of operation, and that they had also planted 130 acres of orange and grapefruit.

That entity achieves significant revenue from the sale of citrus for tourism and the export of organic citrus, a crop that is grown without using chemicals, such as fertilizers and pesticides, and for which industrial manual labour is essential.

The main areas involved in this production in Cuba are located in Matanzas, Ciego de Ávila, Isla de la Juventud and Mayabeque.
