Stefaan Dobbels, Gerdo NV:

Leek prices finally rebounding

The cooler weather has affected leek prices. Stefaan Dobbels from export company 'Gerdo' welcomes this change, "Finally, there is an upswing. I am particularly happy for producers now that prices have gone up. Recent times have been hard. A lot of work and money loaned, that's no fun," he concludes.

45 to 55 cent
Stefaan indicates that the prices are momentarily between 45 and 55 cents, depending on the quality, "It started right after New Year's. The prices increased due to the cooler weather conditions and various promotions in supermarkets. In the meantime, export is now well underway." He expects prices to fall again in the coming days, "Possibly to 40-45 cents."

According to Stefaan, lettuce is also doing well, "It is pretty expensive, around 60 cents right now. There is not much production in Belgium and the Netherlands. On top of this, the quality in France is lower right now. In general the lettuce is somewhat lighter during this period, but this is also the case in Belgium."
