Hans Maagendans, Banafood:

Banana market picking up

Christmas used to be a busy time for the banana market. "Personally, I think Christmas time is one of the least important periods for bananas. It seems like people are choosing to shop later and later. Between week 51 and week 1 the banana market did not do well. There were large surpluses, and on the free market, plenty of bananas were offered in commission," says Hans Maagendans from Banafood Services GmbH from Straelen.

Still, Maagendans is not pessimistic, "The market is cleaning up now and is slowly starting to pick up again. In some places there is still some supply remaining, but I expect prices to go up by the end of this week or the beginning of next week. Sales are starting to do better. People have had enough sweets over the holidays and want to start eating healthy again. As expected for this time of year, it is cold in Colombia and Costa Rica, which means growing conditions are not optimal. So for this time of the year, supply is normal."
