"15 to 20 pallets of wild mushrooms weekly"

Fruit Vandepoel in full Christmas spirit with specialties

Wholesaler Fruit Vandepoel is already in the Christmas mood. There is a diverse assortment available, and according to owner, Wim Vandepoel, the specialties are doing well. "The 'normal' products such as citrus and apples are selling moderately well, but the exotic products such as soft fruit, wild mushrooms and the forgotten vegetables are very popular right now."

Comprehensive range

Wim tells us that a few years ago the winter season was still quiet. "Our range was much less extensive. At the time we offered mostly seasonal fruit. Our goal was to sell more in the 'quiet' period. Since then our warehouse has expanded, and nowadays almost everything is available. We even sell some products year round, like the baby vegetables."

Real Christmas pumpkins

Fruit Vandepoel has deliberately chosen to remain on the market early in Brussels. "We have thought about moving, but the market offers a lot of advantages. The customers just come to us and take their products with them. If we had to deliver everything ourselves, that would bring a lot of extra costs with it. We have also built up a steady clientele over the years who are used to coming here. Many come multiple times a week for smaller volumes and that would make delivery too expensive."

Colorful

One of the specialties of Vandepoel are the 'cotes de blettes' or chard. "These are available in different colors," says Wim. "A lot of catering/restaurant companies use this product to get more color on the plate or to put it into a puree. It is really something special. The volume remains small. I have been supplying the colored chard since last year. This product comes from a supplier in France, just like our forgotten vegetables."

Wild mushrooms

The wild mushrooms are pretty popular right now. "We are now doing 15 to 20 pallets a week of wild mushrooms. It is striking that the wild mushrooms are doing so well at the moment because the season started back in September/October. The quality is top-notch, but the demand is small. This year they came earlier because of the warmer weather. Once the wild season has started, sales go smoothly and last until New Year's."
