The State's Phytosanitary Service (SFE) announced on Thursday that the pepper export season has begun. Thus, the entity said, there would be an increase in inspections to verify that the product is free from pests, which would benefit Costa Rican exports.
According to the SFE, during the third season, which ended in August, the country exported 111 containers with 195,069 boxes of sweet chilli, i.e. 1,374,865 kilograms or 1,300 tons of fresh fruits, more than what was exported in 2012 (776,000 kilograms) and in 2013 (1,068,820 kg).
"These inspections will take place every week in greenhouses and every day in the packing facilities during the productive season, allowing us to get rid of non quarantine and quarantine pests and diseases," said Gustavo Carmona, Coordinator of the SFE's Certification Program for Chilli and Tomato.
