Italy: Metis plums make a difference

The annual general meeting of the Metis group was held last week in Nimes, France. FreshPlaza asked Giancarlo Minguzzi, chairman of Minguzzi SpA Consortile, to comment.

"We mainly analysed productive data. In total, there are 200 hectares being cultivated in Spain, Italy and France, and we wish to double that number by 2016. The total 2014 production was of 2,000 tons, 90% of which were of grades 50 mm and above. The produce was sold mainly to the UK, Germany, France, Scandinavia, Holland, Belgium and Italy."

"We could not satisfy more demands. The produce was really popular both in retail and traditional markets. This year has been awful for plums but Metis, thanks to their great quality, grades, consistency and sugar/starch content (min 15/16/17 brix level) made the difference".

"From an agronomical point of view, producers were extremely satisfied and tests are being carried out in order to obtain varieties with excellent characteristics."
