The avocado season is currently in full swing at Spanish company Natural Tropic. "The season started with very high prices, but eventually the price level dropped significantly. The current situation being enough avocados available on the market but sales are slow. There's a lot of competition from countries like Israel, Chile and Colombia," Kenneth Meyer says.
Hass avocados
The price level of avocados is now around 10.50 Euro for the large sizes, 8.50-8.75 Euro for the mid range, and around 1.30 Euro for the smaller sizes. Kenneth isn't expecting any big changes in the coming weeks. "I think the market will improve mid-January. Spain will then be in a better position until the end of May, as less volumes will be available from other countries."
At the start of the season, Natural Tropic mainly carried Bacon avocados. "There's not a lot left of this variety, and the quality isn't as good now. At the moment we're mainly working with Fuerte and Hass avocados, both of which are of good quality. The eating quality of these avocados is among the best in the world," Kenneth concludes.
Earlier, he already pointed out that Natural Tropic is one of the few Spanish companies investing in the cultivation of avocados, because they have faith in the potential of this exotic fruit. Natural Tropic also sells cherimoyas, and soon the organic variety will be available.
