New rules for food labelling

On December 13, 2014 the EU Food information regulation was put into force. "This is an important milestone for clarity and truth in the presentation and labelling of food, and it makes it possible for people to be able to better identify what is in their food," says Christian Schmidt, the German minister of Food and Agriculture, about the new regulation. From now on there will be uniform rules throughout Europe regarding the labelling of food. These new regulations must be met within three years.

The new Food information regulation requires, among other things, the packaging information is to be clearly written, clearly labelling when food substitutes are used and an improved indication of allergens. As of December 2016 a mandatory uniform statement of the nutritional values will be required on all packaged food products.
