German competition authority slows down Edeka

The German competition authority has taken unusual steps to prevent Edeka and Tengelmann from realising their fusion plans without permission from the competition authority. The instance has put out a temporary ordinances against both concerns for the moment, reports the German newspaper 'Tagesspiegel' on its website.

Both traders have started to prepare their company for the fusion, even though it has not yet been approved. There have been negotiations about purchasing products together from now on. But changes in the store network have also been discussed. As long as the competition authority has not yet approved the fusion, no stores are allowed to be closed and no fundamental changes can be made. Or both concerns may be fined.
