French, Spanish and Italian tomato producers are worried about the increasing amount of Moroccan tomatoes on the E.U. market. According to figures from the Saint Charles market in France (the main entrance into the E.U.), a 66% increase in Moroccan tomatoes imported into the E.U. was recorded in October 2014 compared to the same month last year.
The growth in October was followed by a 55% increase in November 2014 compared to the year before. These figures worry European producers who insist on finding solutions to stop the increase of Moroccan tomato imports.
They are asking the European Commission to apply safeguard measures provided for in the partnership agreement, and to modify the calculation on value of tomatoes imported from Morocco. According to the European producers, they are seeing heavy losses due to Moroccan competition.
