Jan Franje, Franje Onions:

"High quotation hampers onion trade"

Exchange quotations often cause commotion in the world of onions, and this year is no exception. "Quotations go up to 9 Euro, while the bale price is 11 Euro. I find it incomprehensible that those quotations are so high. The exchange quotation is hampering onion trade at the moment. Only Middenmeer is quoting normally. When I have to buy onions for 9 Euro, I have them selling for 11 Euro. That means I can't make any money on them," Jan Franje of Franje Onions concludes.

"And it's not the first time that has happened. Last year around October, quotations were also far too high. These prices are really vexatious," Jan goes on. According to the packager, the onion trade has generally become a lot calmer. "The price is slowly reducing. Surrounding countries offer the onions more cheaply. This year, more German onions came our way than in other years."

"The mood for next year is rather pessimistic, but nobody knows what will happen. Africa shuts down every year, only now Russia won't take over. At the moment, traditional destinations such as Africa and South America are seeing reasonable trade, but it's all decreasing a bit and nothing spectacular is happening," Jan says. "Trade in organic onions is still relaxed, but October and November are always slower months. Things will have to get going again with the holidays approaching. Quality is an issue after the warm autumn, not only in organic, but also for conventional onions. We'll have to keep paying attention!"
