After strong demand during the run-up to Thanksgiving, the market for broccoli has eased up. It's expected that demand should pick up again in December.“After last Thursday, the market has been stagnant,” said Jason Lathos, commodity manager for Church Brothers. “It's sort of a holiday hangover, where a lot of guys order for Thanksgiving and then wait a few days.” On November 26, the price for a carton of bunched 14s out of the Salinas-Wattsonville area was between $7.00 and $10.45. The price for a 20-pound carton of cut crown broccoli was between $9.00 and $12.45. Lathos anticipates the market picking up again in about a week.
“We're in the a middle of a lull,” he explained. “Starting next Friday, or the following Monday, we should see overall activity increase.”
