An aspect worth noting in the the orange markets current situation is the evolution of annual consumption of fresh citrus per inhabitant per year. The increase in the import of juice concentrate from countries like Brazil has been identified as one of the causes that can explain why the average per capita consumption of citrus in the EU has stalled.
Destination of Spanish orange exports
As for the countries where Spanish oranges are exported, 80% of the fruit is shipped to destinations within the European Union (EU), most notably Germany and France:
- Germany receives another 27%: 436,860 tonnes.
- The United Kingdom is the destination for 10% of the shipments: 161,800 tonnes.
- In the countries of Eastern Europe, purchases are gradually increasing each year, despite their lower purchasing power, with Poland, the Czech and Slovak Republics and Hungary as the largest consumers. They receive approximately 210,340 tonnes of Spanish oranges.
- Outside the European Union, where 20% of all orange exports are shipped (323,600 tonnes), the main destinations are Russia, Switzerland, the United States, Norway, Canada, Algeria, U.A.E. and Saudi Arabia.
Among the orange varieties currently produced in Spain, one of the most noteworthy is the Navelina, which represents almost 45% of the total, followed by the Washington Navel, which barely reaches 12% of all sweet oranges produced. Bitter orange represents less than 1% of the total production.
30% of Spanish oranges are intended mainly for the domestic fresh market, while the processing industry absorbs about 18% of the production and of these about 60% goes to the production of juice. In this regard, it is worth noting the importance of oranges of the Blanca group (Valencia), 90% of which are intended for juice production.
Regarding seasonality, about 45% of all oranges exported are early varieties, and almost 50% are late oranges. The rest corresponds to Salustiana and bitter oranges.
