At wholesaler Wijnand de Mooij, another busy period has arrived with the sale of Italian lettuce varieties. "Supply is coming along well despite the weather. Prices are under pressure, however. In the past, Italy exported a lot of lettuce to Russia, which has mostly ending up on the European market. The lower prices do have the advantage that more people are switching to Italian lettuce, or are passing up on the local produce," Frits de Mooij says.
Earlier this year, the wholesaler from Rotterdam presented a complete restyling of the Unica Vera brand. The lettuce varieties are packaged in a micro-perforated foil, improving shelf life. "The new packaging is a success with customers," Frits says. He lists retail hits like rocket, lamb's lettuce and mesclun, optionally mixed with edible flowers. "This is especially popular with the restaurant business."

A few weeks ago, Wijnand de Mooij, partnering with Postuma, started a washed range as well, which means the product is offered ready to use.
De Mooij is casting a wide sales net, to greengrocers, market vendors, hospitality (suppliers), and the wholesaler also exports to buyers in surrounding European countries. "We are ready for Christmas. This is the period when it all has to happen. People are looking to have some lovely lettuce with their Christmas dinner. We won't have any problems with supply."
