South Africa: First grapes of the season being packed this week

The packing of early varieties has started in the Northern Provinces and Orange River regions of South Africa. South African table grape association, SATI predicts between 4 -7% increase in volume this season, due to new planting coming into production. The current estimate is between 52.9 - 54.3 million (4.5kg) equivalent cartons.

The packing of small volumes of Early Sweet® started last week. It is expected that most producers in the Northern Provinces region will be packing Early Sweet®, Prime and Starlight by the end of this week. Weather conditions are warm and relatively dry and thus perfect for harvest.

The very early parts of the Orange River region have started packing Prime in very low volumes. It is expected that volumes will only reach significant levels in these areas towards the end of the week. Very hot weather conditions are being experienced.
