Colombian authorities have already approved all internal procedures

Colombia green lights trade agreement with EU

Colombia has completed internal procedures related to the trade agreement with the European Union and awaits ratification from nine of the 28 Member States of the block so that it definitely comes into force, said the Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the provisional application of the agreement would continue until the EU and all the countries that comprise it complete their internal procedures and approve the treaty.

Congress adopted the trade agreement between Colombia and the European Union via Act 1669 of 2013 and the Constitutional Court declared it could provisionally be enforced through its ruling C-335 of June 4, 2014.

The Ministry said the Government had taken the necessary measures to maintain the effects of the agreement since its provisional application had started on August 1, 2013.

To that end, they said, the government issued Decree 2247 of November 5, 2014 by which "the country will honour the commitments of market access acquired by Colombia under the Trade Agreement between Colombia and the EU and its Member States, signed in Brussels on 26 June 2012, in response to the 1669 Act of 2013 ".
