Mali potato sector expects to produce over 57,000 tons

The Inter-Professional Group of the Potato Sector in Mali (Gipt-Mali) plan to produce over 57,542 tons of ware potatoes over a total 3,196.8 ha during the 2014-2015 campaign.

This production is expected in the South, in the region of Sikasso, with a turnover of over 10 million FCFA.


The traders in the Gipt-Mali expect to commercialise 48,611 tons of potatoes on the national and sub-regional market with a previsional 11.6 billion FCFA turnover. Input importers in the Sikasso region expect to import 5,994 tons of input of which 1,998 tons is of seed and 3,996 tons of fertiliser. In 2013 the Gipt-Mali had a production that reached over 95,000 tons, i.e. an execution rate of 77% of forecasts, with a commercialisation rate of 80% of raw production.

Potato production has benefitted for a few years now from the Agricultural Competitivity and Diversification Programme (Pcda) from the World Bank.
