Giuseppe Giomaro - Sempre Verde

"Italy: "Temperatures do not favour winter produce"

"Temperatures are still too high despite it being the end of October and winter produce such as red chicory and clementines are affected by them," explains Giuseppe Giomaro, owner of Sempre Verde sas.

Giuseppe Giomaro.

Far example, the prices of the various types of red chicory are quite low at the moment: "we are talking about €1-1.20/kg for good quality round red-chicory from Chioggia and €2/kg for red chicory from Treviso. This is due to the fact that consumption is favoured by cold weather."

Italian clementines are increasingly early
The wholesaler also deals with Spanish and Italian clementines. "The first quantities of produce from Calabria and Sicily are entering the market now, while we are still selling Spanish produce. Spanish clementines are the first on the market in late September, but in the last few years Italian producers are managing to harvest early."

Despite this, clementine prices are also low and colour is not ideal due to the high temperatures.
