Mexico: Weevil pest devastated 60% of jalapeño crops

The State and Local Units of Plant Health convened an urgent meeting yesterday at the main hall of the Local Livestock Association.

The goal, said the director of Rural Development, Edmundo Muñoz García, was to organize a plan to combat the weevil pest by, in the first place, applying the appropriate chemicals, which will be subsidized.

Then, he added, we must keep the chilli, infested with weevils, from other parts of the country from arriving to the region.

Finally, its necessary to establish a health culture in relation to this crop, which offers thousands of people employment prospects each season.

The president and treasurer of the Municipal Unit of Plant Protection, Raul Zubia and Cesar Piceno, attended the previous meeting on Wednesday.

Bernardino Nava, representative of the agency at the state level, also attended the meeting and spoke about how the town of Saucillo had dealt with a similar plague infestation in 2012.

The producers worked together, he stressed, on a plan that has allowed them to reduce the pest's presence to only 10% of what it was at its critical point; which is why it was imperative all producers participated in the session yesterday.
