Aldi Süd has 5000 stores

It is now official: as of October 2014, the Aldi Süd business group 5000 stores worldwide. This number shows that Aldi Süd has managed to become highly successful with its basic principle 'best quality at the lowest price' not just in Germany, but also internationally.

What began in 1914 with a small shop selling bakery products in the German Essen, later developed into a globally successful concept under the name Aldi (Albrecht Diskount). After the two business groups Aldi Süd and Aldi Nord were established in 1961, only a few years later Aldi Süd started to open branches outside of Germany as well. In 1967, the business group purchased Austrian retail chain Hofer, which had around 30 stores at the time. In 1976, the first stores in the US were opened, followed by stores in Great Britain (1990), Ireland (1999), Australia (2001), Switzerland (2005), Slovenia (2005) and finally Hungary (2008).
