Italy: Good prices for chard at the Lusia fresh produce market

It was a positive year for chard producers. The vegetable is sold at the Lusia fresh produce market throughout the year.

Most of the produce is available between April and November with 150/200 tons per month. Chard is packed loose in plastic crates. Leaves are dark green with a white and fleshy heart. Plants are usually 35-40 cm high.

Demand wasn't very strong at the beginning of the year and prices were similar to those of 2013. Then demand increased in May and benefited prices, which in some periods even surpassed €1/kg.

The average price during the period examined was of €0.58/kg, higher than the previous year.

According to the operators, the areas dedicated to chard will be increasing in the future, as it costs very little to produce, yields are excellent and returns are good.

Cut chard leaves are also very popular. Although they need more labour, returns are quite interesting as crops can be cut two or three times. Prices are continuously increasing, as are the volumes sold. This product is particularly suitable for companies with small plots and that use family labour force.
