Sobey’s supports local Nova Scotian apple growers
While Sobey’s cannot help every grower, marketers like Scotian Gold or many other regional produce suppliers would have a hard time existing without the support. “Some growers prefer to be independent, or don’t have the volume of crop that Sobey’s requests,” state Diliberatore, “There is some competitive edge to selling at Sobey’s, but it helps the region economically and allows local growers to sell their produce close to their operations driving costs out of the system.” Supporting the local market, Sobey’s helps make the local agricultural system sustainable.
Sobey’s in each region offers significant support to local growers creating communities through connecting growers to local consumers. While the price of apples currently remains relatively stable in comparison to last year, they are expecting price pressure in months to come due to the large apple crop worldwide. However, Nova Scotia remains a great environment for growing apples, such as Honey Crisp and the new Sweetango, consumer favourites. “Growers are investing in their farms for years to come. They will be sustainable as they continue to have Sobey’s support.”
