Lidl modernizes Austrian branches and no longer wants to be a discount store

This year Lidl invested more than 100 Euro to modernize one fifth of their 202 Austrian branches, reports the Austrian website nachrichten.at. Last week their store in Wels re-opened. This branch was so old that they did a complete renovation of the store - total cost was around 2.5 million Euro.

The company has changed. "We are not a discount store anymore. We are a high efficiency supermarket with the genes of a discounter - a principle of simplicity, with an assortment that the customer needs at a good price," says director Alexander Deopito. To fulfil these new requirements, the new branches, such as the one in Wels, have high, light sales rooms, a modern bakery with all sorts of fresh bread and pastries, more refrigerated shelving and more fresh fruit and vegetables.
