Low production prices abroad threaten French escarole production
All of Trad’Union’s salad production stays in France, none is exported outside of the country. Mr Perrot says that French consumers want their escarole to be as white in colour as possible.
Trad’Union’s escarole is packaged in either IFCO plastic crates or wooden ones.
Mr Perrot says that the largest threat to escarole production in France comes from the low production prices in other countries. Italy and Spain are a particular threat to French escarole production and small producers are stopping escarole farming altogether.
In the future, Mr Perrot says that he would like to see new outlets for escarole and a “harmonisation of production costs”.
