The National Quality and Plant and Seed Health (Senave) will restrict the issuance of Phytosanitary Import Credentials (Afidis) for onions.
This regulation will be effective from October 6 to 25, approximately, depending on the local behaviour of the consumption of the agricultural product.
Pablo Ayala, CEO of Senave, said the measure was carried out because of a request made by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG), which seeks to strengthen local onion producers.
"According to a report by the MAG, starting October, onion producers would be supplying 90% of local demand, so we will restrict the issuance of Afidis and watch the behaviour of local supply," said Ayala.
Estimates are that the local onion production would amount to 2 million kilos, and that the local market demands 70 tons per day, according to data handled by MAG.
