Ecuador: Papaya exports to the United States, on hold

Since the phytosanitary authority of the United States has denied the use of the mango's hydrothermal treatment plants for Hawaiian papaya, the country still doesn't have the ability to export that product to that market.

Earlier this year, Agrocalidad announced the possibility of selling papayas to the U.S., as there was the commitment to implement a work plan. This included, for example, applying a heat bath to prevent fruit pests.

The producers had considered the possibility of using the mango's hot water treatment plants until they built exclusive plants to wash the papaya, which would cost between 200,000 and 300,000 dollars.

Roberto Castillo, CEO of Corpapaya, said producers currently had other priorities and did not intended to build a plant immediately. "It's very expensive and we are still not sure if the U.S. will be a good market," he said.
