US (CA): Cantaloupe supplies transition from California to Arizona

Higher-than-normal temperatures this season have made for a quicker transition from supplies of cantaloupes in California to supplies from Arizona. With supplies winding down in California and the Arizona season still getting started, prices have firmed up.

“Supplies are dropping off significantly,” said Barry Zwillinger of Legend Produce in California's Central Valley. “The West Side deal should be done by October. Desert supplies will be stepping up by October, then the fall deal coming out of the Arizona desert will start.” Prices have been firming up, with a carton going for about $10.00, which, Zwillinger noted, is about a dollar more per carton than prices from this time last year. That could be due to there being less overlap between the seasons in California and Arizona.

“Everybody is about two weeks ahead of normal due to higher temperatures,” explained Zwillinger. “There's usually about two to three weeks of overlap between the seasons in Arizona and California, but it will be less this year.”
