Peruvian citrus exports growing by 15% every year

PeruCitrus has been a registered trademark for the past six years, created with the goal of promoting Peruvian citrus overseas. It is used as a means of introduction at international trade fairs and events.

"The only requirement to become a ProCitrus member is to own land with citrus plantations. About 140 companies are currently associated, some of which also do their own sales directly, "explains Emilia Belaunde, marketing and communications manager of Procitrus.

For their part, smaller producers who are unable to sell their fruit directly do so through the Consortium of Fruit Producers (CPF), which is also linked to ProCitrus. 

For Peru, the most important citrus fruits are mandarins and Minneola tangelos, although table oranges and limes are also exported. The most important markets are Europe, the United States and Canada, "and we are currently trying to diversify with Russia and Asian countries like China and Japan. Regarding the latter, we should be able to gain access soon and we have very good prospects," said Emilia. 

Regarding Minneola tangelos, ProCitrus this year has launched a pilot project for the introduction of a quality label in collaboration with six exporters. "To this end, we have carried out measurements of the Brix level and other quality indicators and in a few weeks we will receive the final results of the project."

The Peruvian citrus season runs from March to September/October, depending on varieties. According to Emilia, "this season we have managed to produce over 100,000 tonnes and Peruvian citrus exports continue to increase at a rate of 15% per year." 

Given the goal set by the Peruvian government for the country to double its volume of exports in the coming years, Emilia believes that the greatest challenges will fall not only on sanitary aspects, but especially in market access and diversification. "In this regard, this year we'll be taking part for the second time at World Food Moscow, where we will have our own stand."
