Peru: The Hass avocado cluster in the Chinchero corridor will boost Apurimac’s production

Starting next year, the production of the Hass avocado cluster, sponsored by Sierra Exportadora in the Chinchero corridor in Apurimac, will increase, as 80 to 100 acres of new crops will start producing.
These acres will progressively increase the region’s Hass avocado production until, by the fifth year, we achieve an annual harvest of 800 tons, said José Laos, head of the Sierra Exportadora’s Center for Economic Development in Apurimac.

This increase will be possible as the business plans of three producer organizations, which received funding from Agroideas, develop.

The organizations, Fruticultores Valle Pampas, Productores Agropecuarios y Frutícolas Eden-Ocobamba and Organicos de Valle Pampas Agricultural Producers, will receive a total of 1,043,000 soles (more than U.S. $365,300).

"This will allow us to increase the supply of this variety in the domestic and international markets, which, in turn, will bring more profits to the producers and validate our commitment to the conversion of strong avocados to Hass avocado in the Andes," said Guillermo Parodi, head of the Sierra Exportadora’s National Hass Avocado and Fruits Program.

Parodi said that, since the Chinchero corridor was connected with Cusco, Ayacucho and Huancavelica, achieving this level of productivity in said corridor was important because these regions could join Apurimac’s avocado productive dynamics.

The business plans submitted by these associations aim at increasing production and productivity of the Hass avocado in their growing areas.
