Italy: New campaign for Trybeca

"Summer hasn't been all that great this year but luckily it did not affect us that much: our Nashis did quite well, as flavour is good and grades are uniform," explain the owners of Trybeca (in the photo, Fabrizio Oderda)

Trybeca has invested a lot in research over the years to find the best fertilizing formula and to create a data base spanning 25 years. Thinning is still carried out by hand, just like everything else, which of course means higher production costs.

"It was my father who started with this crop in the late 1980s. He bought the first plants abroad in 1988 and slowly narrowed the varieties down to the three we cultivate now. He learned about Nashi from a friend who came back from Japan in 1982."

650 tons are expected this year and the company is also revamping its look. "After various requests from consumers, we have also decided to start selling our produce online, as it is still difficult to find the fruit in stores."

In addition, Trybeca could start working with foreign markets, "though we still very much focus on the domestic market, as we are still working on Italian consumers getting to know the fruit. Some of our partners believe in this fruit and are happy to work with us, whereas others are still underestimating the potential of such a unique product."

Growing Nashis could therefore be an occasion to liven up the sector, though one would have to have the same level of know-how Trybeca developed over the years.
