US (VA): Weird weather won't affect state's apples

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services says the crop is doing well.

Virginia is home to 150 apple growers and is the nation's sixth largest apple-producing state.

Prime apple season typically starts this month and continues through November.

But growers have been harvesting since August, when the earliest varieties started ripening.

"Actually, this year, the cool summer has been great for the apple crop, it's what apples like and we've had rain right about the time that we've needed rain so the crop is looking really good," Gwen Ikenberry, owner of Ikenberry Orchards told Your Hometown News Leader.

Some of the best apples to buy right now are Fuji, Golden Delicious, Gala and Ginger Gold.
