Dolf Ursem, Everest growers union:

"Good demand for iceberg lettuce, but kilos are lacking"

Like other open ground vegetables, there is a good demand for iceberg lettuce at the moment. "The cultivation is a little behind. We are around six or seven days behind the harvest schedule and I don't expect us to make up for it," says iceberg lettuce grower Dolf Ursem of growers union Everest. The grower expects to be able to harvest iceberg lettuce all throughout October. "The supply remains small at the moment, so I expect the good demand and price to hold up."

The quality of the iceberg lettuce itself is good. We aren't reaching 700/800 gram weights at the moment. 600 grams is our limit. We normally harvest a reasonable amount of kilos in September, but not this year," continues Dolf. "We supply quite a lot of iceberg lettuce to the industry and they need a lot of volume, so we have less left for the open market."
