Germany: supply pressure for plums continues

The many supermarket offers around plums that were carried out in the German supermarkets at the end of August seem to have had an effect, reports the German Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft (AMI) on its website. In week 35 the number of households that bought plums increased by 30%, figures from the AMI consumers panel show. It was clear more plums were sold, and the German origin was on the front line. The increased demand has caused some market alleviation and the decrease in stocks.

But the supply pressure is still on, especially as the sales probably can't be pushed any further. This is why wares were also stored, mainly to take some of the pressure off the market.

The plum harvest in Germany entered its last phase this month. In the early areas in the south the picking of the late varieties such as Presenta will soon be finished. In the later areas some more plum varieties are still being harvested. By mid September most of the German harvest will be over.
