Germany: main apple harvest starting on the Niederelbe
The apple season officially started on September 4th, reported the German 'Landvolk-Pressedienst' (Country Folk Press Service). Fruit growers are looking forward to a big harvest, and have properly prepared by having enough fruit cases and storage. Also, the number of people helping with the harvest has increased in comparison to last year. Consumers can look forward to high quality apples with a favourable price-performance ratio.
The Elstar variety, which is the most important variety in the region, and the Holsteiner Cox, a typical apple for the region, are now beginning their main harvest. Experts estimate that the harvest here will yield 330,000 tons. That is 150,000 tons more than during the disappointing previous year. In all of Germany the apple harvest is suspected to yield 970,000 tons, and the entire EU will most likely yield around 10 million tons.
