Grape harvest in Peru 8 percent larger than last year

According to preliminary estimates, the 2014 grape harvest in Peru could increase to 470,000 tonnes. That would mean an increase of 8% compared to last year, the German Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft (AMI) reports on its website. During the first half year, 227,798 tonnes of grapes were harvested, 10% more than last year. Reasons for this development are expansion of the cultivation area, and larger harvest quantities.

Over the past years, cultivation was mainly expanded in the Piura region, for the purpose of extending export to the months from October until December. In 2013, the total grape acreage was 21,400 hectares. That was 4% more than the year before. In the Piura region, the largest harvest yield of the country was achieved. Here, the harvest yield was 29.4 tonnes per hectare, while in Ica only 19.3 tonnes per hectare was harvested. Because of the high harvest yield and the constant acreage growth, Piura has evolved into the second most important region for grape cultivation, after Ica.
