Alfonso Gálvez, general secretary of ASAJA Murcia

"Spain: "It is outrageous that citrus and melons are excluded from EU aid"

ASAJA Murcia criticised the exclusion of melons and citrus from the list of products to receive aid after the Russian ban on Spanish fruits and vegetables imposed three weeks ago, as reported by sources of the agrarian organisation in a statement.

Its general secretary, Alfonso Gálvez, said that "we find it outrageous that the EU will exclude citrus and melon from the aid to alleviate the effects of the Russian ban, as they are two very important products for Murcia's horticulture."

Furthermore, he also stressed that "unfortunately and sadly, the Russian veto on Spanish fruits and vegetables is still in force, so if the situation does not change, the ban will entail very negative effects for the autumn vegetable and citrus campaigns."

"We believe that the EU should push harder to resolve the situation, which, either directly or indirectly, affects more than 40% of small and medium growers in our region," he said.
