Pedro Luis Benitez Velez, delegate of SAGARPA, confirmed on Wednesday that 83% of the avocado orchards in Michoacán are certified.
He highlighted the importance of the work done by the committees in terms of monitoring to avoid the possible ingress of plant products or animals showing signs of contamination. Without this certification the producers wouldn't be able to export their products.
The delegate added that, in some cases, the certification had been withdrawn because the orchards weren't complying with the relevant requirements. He also said that their next challenges were to obtain the certification for guava, mangoes and berries so they could export them to the Japanese and Korean market.
SAGARPA focuses an important part of their work on attacking and fighting all types of pests, such as locusts, which, a week ago, invaded crops in Michoacan's coast.
