Italy: Difficult to save the melon season

"The hail and fungi that damaged many crops in different production areas mainly in Northern Italy reduced the melon supply for weeks," explains Francesco Rensoni, Codma PO technician.

"Our crops in Umbria and Marche are still in production and melons are good. Sugar content is high and has been throughout the campaign - we are really satisfied."

"The market was OK between July and mid-August but, after the 15th, the situation changed also due to bad weather. We will see how things go in the next few days, although I don't believe in a dramatic change."

"We only have little produce left though, so the market might become more favourable."

Codma PO produces 3,000 tons of melons per year (especially yellow netted varieties) which are sold loose, in CPR R1 plastic crates, minibins and cardboard boxes under the Dolce Fresco brand.
