Italy: No consequences of ban on export of Dutch vegetables so far

"Bunch tomatoes are the most imported product from the Netherlands this time of year, followed by California peppers and salad tomatoes, endive, aubergines, cucumbers and radishes," explains Stefano Pezzo, sales manager for Cherry Passion Srl.

"During the entire season, the price of bunch tomatoes was much lower than production costs except for a few short peaks. This was due to the low consumption throughout Europe because of the weather."

In fact, just like in the rest of Europe, the weather in the Netherlands too was cloudy and rainy over the last four months.

"Luckily the Russian ban has not had particular consequences on Dutch vegetable exports so far as, as far as I know, the Netherlands do not export big volumes towards that country. Of course Dutch companies that re-export products to Russia will be penalised."

The Dutch peppers imported in Italy are mainly yellow and red, with fewer quantities of green ones.

"Other colours like orange and white are not sold over here. The prices for yellow and red peppers do vary a lot during the season depending on availability. Lately, they have been quite regular and have not fluctuated like those of bunch tomatoes."
