Argentina: Export of onions from Patagonian Protected Region declines by 41%

According to figures from the the Source Quality Certification Program of Fresh Onions, implemented by the Barrera Zoofitosanitaria Foundation (FUNBAPA),
Patagonia's Protected Region traded 350,000 tons of onion during the season.

Of that total, more than 126,000 tons were for export, 41 percent less than last season, which had one of the largest shipments abroad, and 6 percent less than in 2012.

Thus, up to the end of July, Patagonia had exported 126,777 tons, 118,000 of which were sent to Brazil, 8,000 to Paraguay, 714 to the European Union and 78 to the United States.

Shipments to the European market have suffered a marked decline in recent years, which was further accentuated this campaign, as exports amounted to only 50 percent of what was shipped in 2013. Meanwhile, Paraguay doubled its demand over the same period.

The domestic market, however, performed well. Up to July 31, 222,466 tons were sent to the domestic market, only 14,269 less than last season, which attained the record for the last 15 years.
