German vegetarians prefer to buy from Rewe, Aldi and Edeka

Organic products and natural products are popular in Germany. 42 percent of Germans indicate that they purposefully buy these products. But it is often a question of money, as of the smaller earners (monthly net income under 1,000 Euro) only 1 in three people (35%) buy organic products, whereas this percentage is at 53 percent for the larger earners (monthly net income from 4,000 Euro). Despite this the Germans are price conscious, as whether it is organics or not, most Germans (73%) buy most products for day to day use from discounters, the current representative research 'Wer will's schon vegan?' by market research bureau YouGov shows. 4,000 people were asked between May and June 2014 for this research.

As far as the Germans' eating habits are concerned 1.1 percent eat only vegan and 11% eat mostly vegetarian. The number of consequent vegans and vegetarians in Germany is 0.7% (c.q.?) 4.3%. Vegetarians prefer to do their shopping with Rewe, Aldi and Edeka and tend to look more at the brand than the price when buying various products. Compared to those who also eat meat, they buy more from markets, organic stores, in health food stores and directly from the grower.

The group of vegetarians consists mostly of woman, as 65% of the German vegetarians are female, and only one in three (35%) are male. Compared to the meat eaters vegetarians tend to be younger, more sporty and slimmer. Concrete brands that vegetarians tend to buy are Alnatura, Alpro, Katjes, Rapunzel and Schneekoppe (in alphabetical order).
