South Tirol apple harvest starts with Gala variety

It that time of year again. The apple harvest has started in South Tirol, reports the website southtyroleanapple.com. The apple growers here traditionally harvest from mid August to mid November. Once again this year the season starts with the harvest of the variety Gala. Due to ideal cultivation conditions in the valley this apple region this variety can be harvest this early. The apple harvest will be finished in November with the late ripe variety Pink Lady.

What characterises the early ripe apple variety Gala?
Gala has a small to middle large fruit in a round to oval shape. It is a juicy and predominantly sweet apple with a very low acidity level. The flesh is firm and yellowish and turns brown soon after cutting. The Gala apple's peel is slightly tougher than that of most apples. When the sweet Gala isn't immediately eaten, it can stored easily. The variety has a long shelf life due to its harder peel. As far as the aroma is concerned the sweet fruit flesh is reminiscent of pear. Due to the size of the fruit and the sweet taste the Gala is especially popular among children.
