Switzerland: 'Gemüsekultur Beerstecher' celebrates centenary

This year, Swiss family enterprise Beerstecher AG celebrates its centenary, German website Fruchthandel.de reports. Beerstecher produces more than 3,000 tonnes of vegetables each year, both in open ground and the greenhouse. The largest vegetable garden of Zurich will celebrate its anniversary on Sunday, August 31, with a big party for everyone.

In addition to a look behind the scenes at the vegetable production, the visitor will mainly get a lot of information on the subject 'Swiss vegetables'. "One hundred years of Gemüsekultur Beerstecher means 100 years of courage and a pioneering spirit, 100 years of entrepreneurship and innovation and 100 years a family enterprise", Thomas Beerstecher says. It all started in 1914, with a leased plot of land in Zurich. In the Gutstrasse in the Albisrieden quarter, Jakob and Berta Beerstecher-Merki grew vegetables. Freshly harvested, they took it to the vegetable markets of Zurich by dog and pushcart, in the Bahnhofstrasse, the Bürkliplatz and the Gemüsebrücke, where it was sold. Nowadays, one hundred years later, Beerstecher is a limited company, employing over 100 workers in the main season, producing fresh and healthy vegetables on over 100 hectares in the region.
