"International walnut expert presenting to industry"

International Walnut expert, Professor Bruce Lampinen from the University of California has been invited to visit Shepparton, Victoria by the Australian Walnut Industry Association.

As the Walnut Industry expands in Australia the need to build capacity within the industry increases. Technology transfer is an integral part of the strategic plan of the Australian Walnut Industry Association Inc as a way of building the grower knowledge base.

“Professor Lampinen has extensive knowledge and experience in the training of young walnut trees and chilling problems in walnuts. He will also give an overview of new walnut varieties being developed in California” said Ms Carol Kunert, President, Australian Walnut Industry Association.

Current growers are seeking additional information to assist in improving nut yields and quality and new growers are seeking support as they look to develop new orchards and walnut businesses.

“Regular industry seminars like the 2014 Winter Seminar are one way in which the Association can transfer information to a large group of growers. In addition to the presentation by Professor Lampinen growers will have an opportunity to discuss topics including industry quality parameters, export opportunities and costs of production” said Mr Colin Jack, Chair, Walnut R&D Committee.

Professor Lampinen has agreed to share his extensive knowledge with the local researchers and industry representatives at the Walnut Association's Winter Seminar.

“The opportunity to bring Professor Lampinen to Victoria to meet with industry and researchers and give of his extensive knowledge was too good to pass up. We are appreciative of the financial support given by Horticulture Australia Limited using voluntary contributions from the Walnut Industry and matched funds from the Australian Government” said Ms Kunert.

Professor Lampinen will be giving a presentation to growers at Shepparton, Victoria on Saturday 23rd August 2014.
